An impressive weight of 1 libra of Arcadius and Honorius from Antiochia on the Orontes
Lot 2042
Arcadius, with Honorius, 383-408. Weight of 1 Libra (Orichalcum, 50x51 mm, 316.42 g), a uniface square commercial weight with plain edges, Antiochia, 393-408. Arcadius, on the left, and Honorius, on the right, seated facing, each holding scepter in his right hand and globus cruciger in his left; between them, the Tyche of Antiochia, turreted and veiled, seated facing on rock; at her feet, half-length figure of the river god Orontes swimming left; below the sheet metal, †Λ†A†. Rev. Blank. Bendall -. CPAI -. MAH -. Pondera -. Apparently unpublished and of great interest. Somewhat corroded and with some edge chipping on the sheet metal, otherwise, very fine.

The appearance of the famous Tyche of Antiochia as the central figure between the two emperors suggests that these impressive sheet metal weights were very likely produced in Antiochia on the Orontes, one of the largest cities of the empire and home to one of its major mints. The emperors are likely Arcadius, the senior Augustus ruling the East, and his younger brother Honorius, who ruled in the West
